Animated Landscape

Reflection

I started this project by first creating a landscape in Adobe illustrator because I did not like the landscape I created last year in Digital Media 1, this time I decided to create a mountain landscape because I recently went on a trip to long barn; a mountainous town in California. Once I finished my landscape, I made sure to separate each element of the landscape in its own layer so that I can import it into Adobe After Effects. Once I imported the landscape into Adobe After Effects, I added a null layer to the project by clicking "New", then "Layer", followed by "Null Layer". I then linked all of my layers to the null layer by pressing command + a, holding down command and clicking the null layer to unselect it, finishing off with clicking the parent pick whip on one of the layer and dragging it to the null layer to link all of my layers together, this allowed me to scale my whole landscape to fit the 1920 x 1080 resolution for a video. After my whole project was scaled I created a motion path for the sun by clicking "New", than "Layer", and then "Layer Object", ending with selecting the pen tool to create a line. After I created the motion path line for my object, I clicked "^" next to the motion path and then clicked the "^" next to contents followed by clicking "^" next to path and then clicking the stopwatch icon next to the "Path" as well as pressing command + c to copy the path of the line. After the path was copied, I went to the layer with the sun and clicked the "^" icon next to the layer name followed by the "^" icon next to the transform dropdown, finally I pressed the stopwatch icon next to "position" and pasted the position keyframes into the timeline. I repeated these steps for the clouds, boat, and reflected sun. To make the trees sway in the wind, I used the puppet pin tool by, first clicking on the layer with the trees and then selecting the puppet pin tool, next I added pins to the sides of the trees to stabilize the shape of it and then added the final pins to the tops of the trees, I then gradually moved the trees by re-adjusting the pin every four seconds on the timeline. To make the water ripple, I selected the layer with the water and then clicked on "window" at the top, proceeding with "effects + presets, followed by "noise", and then double clicking on "Fractal noise", once in the menu for fractal noise under "Transform", I unchecked the box for "Uniform scaling" and then adjusted the width and height, after adjusting the width and height, I clicked the stopwatch next to evolution to add a keyframe for it and then changed it at the end of my timeline, I made the water look more transparent by changing the blend mode of the noise to "Overlay". Once all of the motion elements of my animation were complete, I pre-composed my project by selecting all of my layers and then clicking "Layer" followed by "Pre-compose". After my project was pre-composed, I added audio to my animation by downloading an mp3 file of lake noises from Pixabay and then dragging that into Adobe After Effects and then dragging it into the timeline to add it to my animation. For the final step, I exported my project as an mp4 file.

The aspect that was the easiest for me in this project was creating the landscape in Adobe illustrator because I have a lot of experience in working in Adobe illustrator and have made a landscape in Adobe illustrator before. The aspect that was the hardest for me in this project was adding the motion path lines to my elements in my landscape because for some reason when I would paste the path into the desired element it would move the element off of the screen and require me to manually readjust the path back into place by resizing and moving the points on the line.
